Die alleinerziehende Amanda King führt in einem Vorort von Washington/DC ein beschauliches Leben – bis ihr eines Tages ein attraktiver Fremder ein Päckchen in die Hand drückt und sie anweist, dieses dem Mann mit dem roten Hut zu übergeben. Urplötzlich fliegen Amanda Kugeln um die Ohren und sie findet sich in einer Welt wieder, in der sie Attentatskomplotte vereiteln muss. Außerdem fühlt sie sich zu jenem attraktiven Fremden, Agent Lee Stetson, hingezogen. Natürlich interessiert sich dieser nicht für alberne Amateur-Spione – egal wie hübsch sie sind. Amanda King est une ménagère divorcée et mère de deux garçons ; Lee Stetson est un espion pour les services secrets américains. Ils n'ont rien en commun, et pourtant suite à une rencontre inattendue, ils vont travailler ensemble sur des affaires d'espionnage aussi délicates que dangereuses. Amanda se retrouve embarquée malgré elle dans de folles et périlleuses aventures ! Ils se chamaillent sans cesse, mais sont irrésistiblement attirés l'un part l'autre...

Amanda King (Kate Jackson) è una tipica casalinga americana. Vive in una modesta abitazione di Washington in compagnia dei due piccoli figli Philip (Paul Stout) e Jamie (Greg Morton) e della vivace e ingenua madre Dotty (Beverly Garland). La sua tranquilla vita cambia quando un agente segreto, Lee Stetson (Bruce Boxleitner), soprannominato "Scarecrow" (Spaventapasseri) nell'edizione americana e "Falco" in quella italiana, le consegna un pacchetto in una stazione ferroviaria. Contiene importanti informazioni da consegnare ad un uomo sul treno, missione che non può completare lui stesso perché seguito da nemici. Da qui inizia una collaborazione sempre più intensa, dove Amanda viene usata come elemento "al di sopra di ogni sospetto" durante le indagini dell'agenzia governativa. Il lavoro si svolge, puntata dopo puntata, sotto il comando di Bill Melrose (Mel Stewart) e della agente, avvenente e acida, Francine Desmond (Martha Smith). Nonostante la contrarietà dello stesso Scarecrow e di Francine, Amanda saprà guadagnarsi con il suo entusiasmo sul lavoro, unito ad una buona dose di intuitività e coraggio, un posto praticamente fisso in molte operazioni importanti, sempre al fianco di Scarecrow.
