Naomi glaubt, den Durchblick zu haben und steckt Menschen beliebig in Schubladen: Da wären ihre Hippie-Mutter, Frauenhasser Cook und die Klette Emily. Bald steht die Schulsprecherwahl an, in der sie gegen ihren Erzfeind Cook antreten muss. Zuvor fährt sie jedoch mit Emily ins Umland, wo es zu einem unerwarteten Techtelmechtel zwischen den beiden kommt. Anschließend ist Naomi jedoch so verwirrt, dass sie Emily sitzen lässt, obwohl diese sie inständig bittet, zu ihren Gefühlen zu stehen. Naomi (Lily Loveless) thinks she has the world worked out, and puts people in their appropriate boxes. There's her hippy mum (Olivia Colman); the adoration from Emily (Kathryn Prescott); Cook's (Jack O'Connell) insulting misogyny; and her politics teacher, Kieran's (Ardal O'Hanlon), flattery. She thinks she has them all sussed, and that it's only her who can see the truth. However, the upcoming student elections leave her at a loss, and her insecurities get the better of her. The trust and confidence inspired by a friend encourages her to stand up to her arch rival, the antithesis of everything she stands for, as her and Cook go head to head; but Naomi learns that nothing is black and white anymore.

Naomi est un peu perdue dans ses sentiments : elle n'ose pas avouer qu'elle est attirée par Emily et se renferme sur elle-même pour ne pas laisser paraître son désarroi. Mais ce n'est pas son seul problème, en effet, sa mère, toujours prête à faire de bonnes actions, accueille dans leur propre maison de drôles d'individus sans gêne. Et comme pour courroner le tout, voilà que le lycée veut avoir un Etudiant Président, Naomi doit se présenter aux élections et gagner pour échapper à l'ultimatum de Cook. Si elle perd, elle devra coucher avec lui.

Dopo essersi mostrata inizialmente riluttante all'idea, Naomi accetta di concorrere contro Cook per diventare rappresentante degli studenti. Intanto, il professore Kieron tenta di baciarla e la ragazza, in preda allo smarrimento, decide di andare con Emily al lago. La tenerezza crescente tra le due le consegna a una tenera notte di sesso, ma il mattimo successivo Naomi si affretta a tornare a casa, lasciando Emily disperata. Ostinata a non ascoltare la sua natura, la ragazza prova a far sesso con Cook, ma qualcosa non funziona e non riesce ad andare fino in fondo.
La vida de Naomi no es nada fácil. Vive con quince personas en su casa, su madre intenta salvar el mundo, se va a presentar a delegada de clase y no está muy segura de su orientación sexual. Emily va a intentar ayudarla y Cook se va a convertir en una pesadilla para ella.
