    First time mum Bridie's hopes for a local Highland birth are threatened when her labour fails to progress. With her midwife's help she decides to make a 4 hour car journey in the middle of the night to hospital. In the far north of Scotland, midwife Morven makes a late night dash to Anastasia's home when her baby makes an unexpected and swift entrance into the world. Whilst in Lochgilphead, on the West coast, mum-to-be Samantha relies on her local midwives to calm her anxieties stemming from a previous traumatic pregnancy.

    In the north of Scotland, midwife Morven closely monitors mum-to-be Emma who has a history of delivering big babies that require a c-section. In Campbeltown on the west coast, Susanna gets closer to her dream of a big family when midwife Helen tries to help her have a local birth without pain relief. Whilst mum to be Karen, who lost her previous baby in pregnancy, relies on her midwife to help her through the worry and tension her latest pregnancy.

In Inverness, midwife Hazel knows mum-to-be Sheena well, as she is now having her seventh baby. Mum-to-be Yasmin is preparing for a local water birth, but is becoming increasingly apprehensive. Kate is expecting her fourth baby and is keen for a home birth.

Michelle is determined to have a local birth, but midwife Pam knows that the size of her fourth baby may make this impossible. Midwife Alison must act quickly when Mihaela develops dangerously high blood pressure, putting both mum and baby in danger.

    On the north east coast, midwife Sheena looks after a woman who recently had a miscarriage, and is concerned about her pregnancy this time around. Pam, who works at Belford Hospital in the town of Fort William below Ben Nevis, hopes to deliver Fiona's second baby there, just as she delivered her first child. Fiona's first baby was premature, and Pam is concerned that might happen again. Meanwhile, Karen and her husband Stuart face a problem as neither of them drive and could struggle to get to the hospital when Karen goes into labour.

    Claire wants a local delivery in Belford Hospital rather than have to visit Inverness to be induced, while in the village of Ellon, Vicky has very high blood pressure and a condition that is dangerous for both mother and baby. In Fort William, midwife Pam is worried that mum Courtney's second child will arrive even quicker than her first.
