With no time to investigate, the team has no choice but to leave it in the ground and return another day. Speculation was rife - could they have found a sword and a Saxon warrior’s burial? This is the story of that return visit, when the team headed back to site with one clear mission - locate and identify the iron object. But as is often the way with archaeology, it wasn’t that simple. From the off, things weren’t quite what they seemed. The team encountered many challenges and unexpected plot twists over a wet and wild weekend. And only after a lot of head scratching and painstaking excavation, were they able to finally make sense of the object and piece together its story.
