On June 17th 1972, a team sent by President Nixon's re-election committee was caught breaking into the Democrats' headquarters in the Watergate building. The programme retraces the events which led to the scandal.
Continues the documentary on the Watergate scandal. Reveals that after the break-in, President Nixon himself took charge of the cover-up. Plays key extracts from the secret White House tape recordings which for twenty years Nixon fought to keep from the public.
Story moves on to the blackmail attempt from Howard Hunt and then James McCord, which led Nixon's counsel John Dean to turn state's evidence for fear he was going to be made Nixon's scapegoat.
The documentary on Watergate moves on, to the point where the American people believed that Nixon should leave office. His wish to have Archibald Cox fired and the refusal of the Attorney General and his deputy to acquiesce to this request, looked to the people like an attempt by Nixon to overthrow the rule of law.
In the final part of this series, the House of Representatives votes for impeachment and Nixon is left in no doubt that he would be found guilty.
