梅安が相棒の彦次郎と京に向かう道中、ある男の顔を見て彦次郎は憎しみを露にする。その男は彦次郎の妻と子を死に追いやった、彦次郎にとっては絶対に許せない仇だった。そして、上方の顔役で殺しの依頼を仲介する元締から彦次郎の仇の仕掛を依頼された梅安は、浪人の井上半十郎とすれ違う。井上と梅安もまた憎悪の鎖でつながれていた。
