Charles Boulin décide de vendre son petit appartement de l'avenue Foch pour acheter un magnifique hôtel particulier dans la banlieue ouest de Paris. Mais l'hôtel particulier se trouve être un pavillon en décrépitude, à Argenteuil. La surprise qu'il voulait faire à sa femme et à sa fille vire au cauchemar quand elles apprennent qu'elles emménagent dans ce taudis en travaux, en compagnie d'ouvriers peu scrupuleux...
