The Grapes of Wrath

Le film raconte l'histoire de la famille Joad, lors de la Grande Dépression aux États-Unis, conséquence de la crise économique de 1929 et le Dust Bowl dans le sud du pays. Il montre la vie des Américains poussés sur les routes et plongés dans la misère lorsqu'ils sont chassés de leurs terres par les banques qui prennent possession de leurs biens fonciers. Ce sont d'honnêtes gens, qui ne cherchent ni la richesse ni la facilité, mais seulement un endroit pour vivre de leur travail et gagner honnêtement leur vie mais qui sont confrontés à la dureté des grands propriétaires qui ne pensent qu'à leur profit, au détriment de tout sentiment humain, et sont prêts à laisser des gens mourir de faim.

The film opens with Tom Joad, released from prison and hitchhiking his way back to his parents' family farm in Oklahoma. Tom finds an itinerant ex-preacher named Jim Casy sitting under a tree by the side of the road. Casy was the preacher who baptism Tom, but now Casy has "lost the spirit" and his faith. Casy goes with Tom to the Joad property only to find it deserted. There, they meet Muley Graves who is hiding out. In a Flashback (narrative), he describes how farmers all over the area were forced from their farms by the deed holders of the land. A local boy, hired for the purpose, is shown knocking down Muley's house with a Caterpillar Inc. tractor. The large Joad family of twelve leaves at daybreak, along with Casy, who decides to accompany them. They pack everything into a dilapidated 1926 Hudson Motor Car Company "Hudson Super-Six Coach" Sedan (automobile) adapted to serve as a truck in order to make the long journey to the promised land of California.
