Un industriale un po' ingenuo, dopo aver fatto fortuna in America, ritorna in Italia per cercare una donna che aveva amato in gioventù. Viene convinto da alcuni truffatori a produrre un film che rievochi la sua storia d'amore. Accetta ed affida l'incarico di dirigerlo ad un giovanotto che gli assomiglia fisicamente. Il neo-regista, cercando la protagonista del film, si innamora di una graziosa dattilografa.
