Auf unserem Planeten sind stets mehr als 2.000 Gewitter aktiv, die jede Sekunde etwa 100 Blitze produzieren. Was sie auslöst und wie sie die Erde und ihr Klima beeinflussen, ist trotz jahrzehntelanger Forschung nach wie vor ein Mysterium. Koproduktion von ORF, National Geographic Channel US, National Geographic Channels International und ZDF, hergestellt von Cosmos Factory entstand, reiste ein Kamerateam auf der Jagd nach Blitzen um die halbe Welt: in drei US-Bundesstaaten, nach Israel, Brasilien und Australien. Ihre Trophäen sind Aufnahmen, auf denen Blitze erstmals mit 1.000 Bildern pro Sekunde in extremer Zeitlupe und obendrein in HD-Qualität zu sehen sind.
