故事發生在清朝乾隆年間，紅花會舵主於萬亭和文泰來手握乾隆身世的秘密，以此企圖要挾乾隆扶持紅花會反清復明，哪知道乾隆派來了張召重突襲兩人，於萬亭死於非命，文泰來則身陷囹圄。陳家洛係於萬亭的義子，悲憤之中發誓要救回即將受審的文泰來替父報仇。在此過程中結識了木卓倫及其女兒霍青桐，霍青桐更是傾慕於陳家洛的俠肝義膽，追隨其後參與了劫囚車的行動。不幸的是，行動最終以失敗告終，與此同時，陳家洛震驚的發現，乾隆竟然正是之前同自己一見如故趣味相投的東方耳。之後，陳家洛返回故鄉，並在此再次偶遇乾隆。
