20世纪40年代，地处南方的徐家川。富家少爷福贵（陈创 饰）自幼顽劣成性，不思上进。这样一个纨绔子弟偏偏娶到了貌美贤淑的米行老板女儿陈家珍（刘敏涛 饰）做媳妇，实实羡煞旁人。只是虽然家境殷实、父母康健、妻子贤惠，福贵却丝毫不知珍惜。在骗子龙二爷的引诱之下，福贵沉湎赌博，最终输掉家产和祖屋，气死父亲（李丁 饰），打跑怀孕的媳妇，一夜变成了穷光蛋。家珍不离不弃，带着女儿凤霞回来和福贵继续过日子。内战、解放、土改……在接下来的几十年岁月里，各种磨难交替加诸福贵一家人的身上，死亡不期而至，痛苦如影随形。早已痛改前非的福贵只能笑中带泪，默默品味着生活中的苦辣酸甜……
