The director was Edgar G. Ulmer, who was born in Austria in 1900. Originally a production designer who worked in both film and theatre for such names as Max Reinardt and Alexander Korda, Ulmer came to the United States in 1931. He began his career as a director in 1934 on a studio picture, The Black Cat.
