Wyatt Cole hat sein Medizinstudium abgebrochen und arbeitet nun als Rettungssanitäter. Im Augenblick hat er jede Menge Ärger am Hals: Er muss endlich seine Spielsucht in den Griff bekommen und sich mit seinem standesbewussten Vater, einem renommierten Chirurgen, und seiner Ex-Freundin Alice, die als Ärztin in der Notaufnahme arbeitet, auseinandersetzen. Wyatt Cole è un paramedico che vive a Portland, nello stato dell'Oregon. Dopo aver abbandonato la scuola di medicina per trasferirsi alle Hawaii e fare surf, Wyatt ha deciso di intraprendere il lavoro di paramedico nella sua città natale, dove vive anche suo padre, un famoso chirurgo che non manca di fare pressioni sul figlio affinché quest'ultimo riprenda gli studi lasciati in sospeso. Wyatt fa coppia sul lavoro con John "Sack" Hallon. Insieme i due hanno un'intesa perfetta che li rende davvero i migliori nel loro campo. A Portland vive anche Alice, l'ex-fidanzata di Wyatt, divenuta nel frattempo un medico e nei confronti della quale il ragazzo nutre ancora un'irresistibile attrazione.
