Precious Ramotswe est engagée par Andrea Curtin, une Américaine à la recherche de son fils Michael, disparu dix ans auparavant. Il était venu au Botswana pour vivre au sein d'une communauté de fermiers qui s'était spécialisée dans les cultures comestibles en milieu désertique. Selon tous les témoignages, Michael avait disparu en pleine nuit et personne ne l'a jamais revu depuis. Apprenant la nouvelle, Andrea et son mari avaient fait le déplacement au Botswana pour partir à sa recherche, allant jusqu'à engager quelqu'un pour les aider, en vain. De son côté, Grace enquête sur des vols mystérieux.
