Jill Hart, a stay-at-home mom in the Los Angeles suburbs, has a breakdown. She attempts suicide, but fails and decides to take on the persona of a dog leaving her husband unprepared for parenthood. The unrelenting stress on the family drives her husband Bill towards drinking, Jill's sister to undertake the role as a new matriarch, and their four children as the new torments.
