In 1947 Chicago, Polish emigrant and bar owner Leonard Chess hires a blues combo that includes guitarist Muddy Waters and harmonica player Little Walter. Waters' and Walter's success leads to Chess' management of stars Etta James, Howlin' Wolf, Chuck Berry and others. Inevitably, business and personal lines blur as the sometimes-turbulent lives of the musicians play out.
Leonard Chess, a Jewish immigrant from Poland, starts a record label that many African-American artists join. But at the peak of their careers, they find it difficult to handle their success.
