Un regista convoca le sue attrici preferite, quelle con cui ha lavorato e quelle che ha amato. Vuole fare un film sulle donne ma non svela molto: le osserva, prende spunto, si fa ispirare, finché il suo immaginario non le catapulta in un’altra epoca, in un passato dove il rumore delle macchine da cucire riempie un luogo di lavoro gestito e popolato da donne, dove gli uomini hanno piccoli ruoli marginali e il cinema può essere raccontato da un altro punto di vista: quello del costume. Tra solitudini, passioni, ansie, mancanze strazianti e legami indissolubili, realtà e finzione si compenetrano, così come la vita delle attrici con quella dei personaggi, la competizione con la sorellanza, il visibile con l’invisibile.
A director calls upon his favourite actresses with whom he’s worked and whom he’s loved. He wants to make a film about women but he doesn’t give much away: he observes them and gleans inspiration, until his imagination catapults them into another era, a past time when the noise of sewing machines fills a workplace managed and populated by women, where men only play marginal roles and the story of cinema can be told from another point of view: that of its costumes. Amidst loneliness, passions, anxieties, heartrending shortcomings and unshakeable bonds, reality and fiction interweave, as do the lives of these actresses with those of their characters, competition with sisterhood and the visible with the invisible.
Un réalisateur réunit ses actrices préférées. Il souhaite réaliser un film sur les femmes, mais ne révèle pas grand-chose : il les projette dans une autre époque, dans un passé où le bruit des machines à coudre emplit un lieu de travail géré et peuplé de femmes et où le cinéma est raconté d'un autre point de vue : celui du costume.
