Dipinta intorno al 1908, cinque anni dopo la visita a Ravenna di Klimt e alla sua folgorazione per i mosaici bizantini, l’opera è uno degli indiscussi capolavori dell’artista.
Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) gehört zu den bedeutendsten Künstlern des Wiener Symbolismus. Weltweite Berühmtheit erlangte er für seine meisterhaften Kompositionen, in denen Gold eine zentrale Rolle spielt. Zur damaligen Zeit riefen seine erotisch geprägten Werke - wie etwa "Der Kuss" -, in denen sich Leben und Tod verflechten, sowohl Bewunderung als auch Kontroversen hervor.
