En karismatisk predikant trollbinder byborna under sina väckelsemöten i Tornedalen på 1930-talet. Bland hans anhängare finns läraren Rakel och hennes man Teodor. Efter att ha fått en uppenbarelse tar Teodor över som rörelsens ledare och börjar styra den i en oroväckande riktning. Det blir en accelererande färd in i mörkret som tvingar Rakel att välja sida, en gång för alla.
