Seed Warriors

In the remote Norwegian town of Longyearbyen, just 1000 kilometres from the North Pole, politicians from around the world came to celebrate the opening of the world’s first global seed bank. After years of difficult negotiations and searching for the right spot, this was deemed to be the safest place on earth. Eventually, 4,5 million seed samples will be stored in this »Doomsday Vault« and ensure the continued existence of biodiversity. But is the dream of global food security achievable? By 2050 temperatures worldwide are expected to rise by at least 2 degrees. This will result in a 30 per cent drop in production of food crops. By this time global food demand will have doubled. How will we feed the world? In SEED WARRIORS we hear from the scientists behind this ambitious project and examine the reality of the fight against hunger.

Es ist das angeblich sicherste Gebäude dieser Art auf der Welt. Gefeit gegen Naturkatastrophen, Klimaveränderungen und selbst Nuklearkriege sollen hier bald drei Millionen in Folie gewickelte Samenproben aus aller Welt lagern und das Weiterbestehen der Artenvielfalt gewährleisten. Doch ist der Traum der globalen Nahrungsmittelsicherheit eine bloße Utopie? Bis 2050 werden die Temperaturen voraussichtlich weltweit um mindestens 2 Grad steigen. Dies führt zu riesigen Einbußen bei der gesamten Nahrungsmittelproduktion — mancherorts bis zu 30 Prozent. Bis dahin wird sich der globale Nahrungsbedarf verdoppelt haben. Wie werden wir die Weltbevölkerung ernähren?

Au Svalbard, en Norvège, à 1000 kilomètres du pôle Nord, on célèbre l’inauguration d’une chambre forte souterraine, le Svalbard Global Seed Vault. Ce bâtiment, probablement le plus sûr du monde, qui abritera presque trois millions de graines différentes, est censé permettre de préserver la diversité végétale. Mais cet espoir de parvenir ainsi à la sécurité alimentaire mondiale n’est-il pas utopique? S’appuyant sur l’exemple du Kenya, le film montre ce que ce «bunker de la fin de monde» sera en mesure de faire – ou non - pour combattre la faim.
