Season 1

  • S01E01 1941 and the Man of Steel

    • June 6, 2011

BBC documentary about Stalin, his rise to power, and the invasion of the USSR by Germany in WWII. It's split into two parts, the first a general overview of the early history. The second part is the details of WWII and after. David Reynolds does an excellent job of explaining what happened with snippets from diaries, letters and other contemporaneous accounts.

  • S01E02 1942 and Hitler's Soft Underbelly

    • June 11, 2011

This BBC documentary covers the North African, Sicilian and Italian campaigns of World War 2. The main question answered is why the Allies chose to fight there at all, when France presented the most direct, and potentially easier, gateway to Germany.

  • S01E03 1945 and the Wheelchair President

    • May 14, 2015

During World War 2, Roosevelt inspired millions with stirring visions of a new and better postwar world, but it was a world he probably knew he would never see. He was commander-in-chief of the greatest military power the world had known, and yet his paralysis from polio made him powerless to accomplish even the most minor physical tasks. Few Americans knew the extent of his disability.
