市井の人々が人生に苦闘しながらも情熱を持って生きる姿を取り上げるドキュメンタリー番組。著名人を取り上げることもある。 普段は垣間見ることのできない人間の一面や、人間関係、生き方、ひとつの職業などを深く掘り下げることで見えてくる隠された本質や、記憶に残る事件・出来事などを長期に亘って密着取材することで、その事柄のありのままの姿を視聴者に届けている。この番組で取材を受けたのを機に有名になった人物も多く、特に反響の大きかったものは出演者の「その後」を追いかけ、過去と現在の様子を再構成して放送する。 制作会社は毎回持ち回りで固定されておらず、レギュラー出演者も置いていない。ただし、以前番組で取り上げた人物の「その後」を放送する回では、フジテレビの女性アナウンサーが冒頭にナビゲーターとして出演し、過去の放送を振り返るとともに、現在の様子を取材したVTRへの振りを行うこともある。
