רוני ותום הם שני ילדים רגילים בני שתים עשרה, שגרים בתל אביב ולומדים באותה כיתה ואף יושבים אחד ליד השנייה. בהתחלה הם אויבים ושונאים אחד את השני, אך מהר מאוד הם מתחברים והופכים לחברים טובים. לפי המתואר, חמיצר כותב הספר, כתב אותו כביכול בהשראת רוני ותום, שאמרו לו שהתנאי היחיד שלהם כביכול הוא שהוא יספר הכל כפי שהוא קרה, ושהוא לא יגזים או יקטין.
