主人公の安唐良平は医学部時代、病院見学で大門未知子の完璧な手術を見て大きな衝撃を受け、世界一の外科医を目指すことになるが、もちろんそれは一般人の目標ではない。達成できる。 その後、「東帝大学病院」に研修医として入職し、冷静沈着で有能な虻川理沙、明るく素朴な癒し系の矢島源五郎らとともに日々厳しい指導を受け、徐々に自信を失っていく。 そんなとき、彼の初恋の相手が入院し、医師として、そして男性としての価値が大きく問われることになる。 同時に、理沙と源五郎にも恋の危機が訪れ、“ドクターの卵”3人が奮闘し、成長していく青春群像劇が展開される。
