  • S02E01 Fashion Designer

    Dylan and Izzy have an eye for clothes and a burning desire to be fashion designers. They join presenter Alex Riley to see what a life in fashion can be like. They head to the London College of Fashion to team up with course director and designer Claudine Rousseau to start creating their own garments out of recycled clothes, affordable and sustainable. They continue to learn how the business works when they meet top fashion designer Giles Deacon. Giles guides them through the nuts and bolts of blocking their designs, pattern cutting and the construction of the garment. Then their creations hit the catwalk at Oxford fashion week.

    What can be done to help the oceans remain clean and efficient? Ella and Struan are two rookies determined to become marine biologists. Alex, Ella and Struan take to the sea in Plymouth Sound to examine just how plastic is impacting on underwater life. Then it is off to Malta for a spot of scuba diving. Struan and Ella complete a survey of fish species in the Mediterranean before getting the chance to give some sharks life after death. They extract live eggs from sharks that have been caught by fishermen and then have the amazing experience of releasing two sharks back into the sea.

    Rookies Akshita and Sam along with presenter Alex take off into the world of aviation. The aspiring young aircrew get their first opportunity to fly a plane as they are catapulted into the skies high above the peak district in a glider. They then head for Manchester to meet an airline pilot who shows them just what is needed to fly a passenger jet, and lets them fly a professional simulator as used to train real pilots. What they have always dreamed of happens as they take to the skies in a small aircraft with mentor Tony, who puts them through their paces handling a twin-engine plane.

    Does a school classroom hold an appeal for you or fill you full of horror? Alex and rookies Joseph and Ophelia find out exactly what it takes to make it in the world of teaching. Science expert Greg Foot puts them through their paces, testing their ability to hold people's attention by trying out some science tricks on the general public. They take a class for a lesson with a difference, teaching literacy and numeracy not in a classroom, but in the woods near their school. Finally, they are left alone with a class as they attempt to teach them a song to perform at the school assembly. This is the nitty gritty of teaching, as Joseph and Ophelia must keep control of the group with no outside help.

    Rookies Amjad and Rosie are keen to build a career as architects. Alex leads the rookies through an incredible experience. The rookies are given stellar advice by Lord Norman Foster, creator of London's Gherkin. They are challenged to design a building to be part of the former Battersea power station redevelopment. They are helped by architect Narinder Sagoo who first takes them off to survey the site to find some inspiration. Then it's back to the drawing board, literally. They find out what is involved working with architects, artists and engineers to realise their design. Finally a 3D-printed model of the building is produced and is used to help present their concept to a panel of architects and experts at the Royal Institute of Architecture.

    They get their hands and wellies dirty as their skills are tested as sheep farmers, working with dogs to shepherd the sheep into pens. They also get up close with the woolly bunch, giving them vitamin shots to keep them healthy. They then get the chance to drive a shiny mega tractor and attempt to plough straight furrows ready for sowing wheat. Finally they enter the intense world of dairy production, where they experience first-hand where milk comes from! Do two city girls have what it takes to be farmers?

    Harvey and Sam are two ambitious rookies who want to make it in the world of film-making, so they join presenter Alex Riley to explore the business! They start off by dropping in on the filming of Paddington 2 to witness the huge operation of making a film in the centre of a big city. After this they hot foot it to Cardiff to join the crew of Casualty to see how a stunt is put together and how tricky it is to film. They then get the chance they had wished for - they make their very own film! Director Emma Lindley takes the rookies under her wing as they script plan, direct and edit their film before premiering it to an eager audience!

    Rookies Edwin and Leila and presenter Alex Riley put on their protective outfits to probe the realm of crime investigation. After a chat with renowned forensic anthropologist Dame Professor Sue Black, they find themselves in a police car racing to a beach where bones have been discovered. But who, or what, do they belong to? The answer lies in the lab. Edwin and Leila are then called to investigate a break-in at a grand hotel, where they are left alone to gather the evidence and identify which suspect is the culprit. Will they get it right and detect the bad guy?

They meet up with a greetings card maker to get some creative ideas and make their very own cards. A trip to the zoo is next to observe how animals move and to observe their expressions. Writer Michael Rosen pops up to give some advice on their work before setting them the task of making their own illustrated books.

    Presenter Alex Riley helps rookies Erin and Tom set their wheels spinning through a journey of cycling discovery. They are assessed by a leading sport scientist before attempting a stage of the Tour of Britain cycle race. The stage contains a punishing sprint and an arduous climb, but the rookies are flanked by Olympian Matt Stevens and police outriders to help them along the way! They then meet eleven-times World Championship-winning BMX racing cyclist Liam Phillips, who teaches them a few tricks of the trade. Finally they hit the velodrome to pit themselves against the clock on the terrifying slopes of the track!
