Tales from Earthsea, known as Gedo Senki in Japan, was a polarizing fantasy film from Studio Ghibli, and debut feature of Goro Miyazaki - son to the most beloved animator of all time. In this video I take a look at how it came to be, why it was so divisive and exactly what is in the power of a name. Quick Note: Tales from Earthsea is based off a series of books known as the Earthsea Cycle by Ursula K. Le Guin - to avoid confusion between the two I refer to the film under it's Japanese name during the video. Isao Takahata made a big name for himself with his adaptation of Johanna Spyri's Heidi, Girl of the Alps. But there's more to Heidi than meets the eye, and in this video I take a look at the glimpses we get into the man Takahata would become, just past the saccharin, cute tale of a small girl chasing goats across the Swiss Alps. It's a Christmas movie that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the greats, and champions a message of kindness and togetherness. Like all of Satoshi Kon's small but wonderful filmography, it's a picture that captures humanity at its terrifying worst, and its inspirational best. March Comes in like a Lion is a show about loss. Despite that, it's one of the most heartfelt and hopeful series I've encountered. Buoyed by a wonderful cast and a steady feeling of narrative ascent, this sweet slice of life hidden inside a show about Shogi proves that sometimes the riskiest moves are the ones most worth taking. Vinland Saga is a phenomenal piece of Viking fiction - packed in equal measure with kinetic violence and beautiful humanity. Over its fifteen years in publication, mangaka Makoto Yukimura has given us one of the medium's best works - one that has truly earned the saga of its title. Vinland Saga was originally recommended to me during 'Patron Picked Purchases' over at the Beyond Ghibli Patreon - an annual event where I'll read and review a manga of your choice! For the month of March we're doing PPP again, and anyone who pledges $5 or more can do just that. It's part of a pledge drive to tip us over the edge of a stretch goal we've been on the cusp of for ages - a deep-dive into all things Full Metal Alchemist. So if you want me to read your favourite, consider supporting me on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/BeyondGhibli The manga section in the middle of the video was edited by the talented Lines in Motion - a wonderful manga and anime analysis channel that you should absolutely check out!! No crying until the end. In Japan, MOTHER is a beloved trilogy of strange, funny, heartrending games - but when it released in America as Earthbound, it didn't enjoy the same success. Retrospective, documentary and celebration all at once, 'We Are MOTHER' looks at the history of one of Nintendo's most peculiar properties and how, against all odds, it found lasting success because of a small, impassioned, and unrelenting fandom. MLiG is one of my favourite channels on YouTube and I was so thrilled I got to work with them on this. If you like in-depth channels about videogames, they have the most enjoyable and tactile deep dives on retro classic and hardware. Check them out!! Reid Young - Starmen.net / Fangamer.com Reid is a de-facto leader of the English-speaking Earthbound community, and was kind enough to allow me to interview him for this video. His work at THE Earthbound fan-site, Starmen, and the support (and Merch!!) he and his team have made for the series over at Fangamer, have made being an English MOTHER fan a little easier on the heart over the years. Whilst the tees have now been retired, if you want to check out some of the beautiful books featured in this video head over to the site - they're available in hardback or .pdf format! Mother to Earth - https://www.mothertoearth.com/ Christian and Bones were generous enough to allow me to use some of their fascinating documentary in We Are Mother. In Barrie Sherwood's sophomore novel, Speed of Lightness, he takes an unromanticised but wildly engaging look at Japan. As our lead, Aozora, dodges Yakuza knuckledusters and parleys with gyaru call girls in pursuit of his missing sister - and the inheritance she's key to - we're taken on a beautifully broken tour of that wonderful world. Jin-Roh can seem an intimidating prospect: as part of a 20 year saga comprised of comic books, movies and even radio dramas, that impressive lineage often puts newcomers off. Giovanni's Island - a picture set during the months and years following the end of World War II - is an unexpectedly hopeful movie. In 1977, an icon was born. The Lightsaber - ethereal in nature and terrifying in power - became the symbol of Star Wars, and would go on to define this series for more than forty years. As the franchise evolved, however, so did its sabers. Star Wars Visions - an animated anthology of shorts by some of Japan's biggest studios and directors - continues to celebrate this ever-changing legacy, but one short in particular - The Ninth Jedi - champion instead a return to a more civilized age...
