  • S2017E06 Tales from Earthsea - The Power of a Name

    • December 8, 2017

Tales from Earthsea, known as Gedo Senki in Japan, was a polarizing fantasy film from Studio Ghibli, and debut feature of Goro Miyazaki - son to the most beloved animator of all time. In this video I take a look at how it came to be, why it was so divisive and exactly what is in the power of a name. Quick Note: Tales from Earthsea is based off a series of books known as the Earthsea Cycle by Ursula K. Le Guin - to avoid confusion between the two I refer to the film under it's Japanese name during the video. Also, there's mild spoilers during part two (the critique) of this video, so use the time jumps to skip ahead if you'd rather miss them. • S2018E12 The Melancholy Promise of Heidi, Girl of the Alps

    • August 27, 2018

Isao Takahata made a big name for himself with his adaptation of Johanna Spyri's Heidi, Girl of the Alps. In doing so he made Heidi the national treasure she is today, celebrated as much in Japan as she is in Switzerland, and she is as famous as the late, great director himself. But there's more to Heidi than meets the eye, and in this video I take a look at the glimpses we get into the man Takahata would become, just past the saccharin, cute tale of a small girl chasing goats across the Swiss Alps. This video was originally produced as part of the Anituber Anthology 4, an homage to the works of Isao Takahata. You can find the full video here: https://youtu.be/OUOp8FTcL2U

Season 2020

  • S2020E01 The View From The Summit - How Haikyuu Makes You Care

    • January 16, 2020

Haikyuu is a show that is easily skipped. It's a sports anime about volleyball - a niche genre about a sport that pales in popularity compared to other ballgames. But Haikyuu trascends those limits, offering a show with such wide appeal that anyone can find something to love in it. It's one of the best anime I've ever seen - and as someone with little interest in sports or sports anime, I almost never saw it - so today let me take fifteen minutes of your time. • S2020E03 The Second Chance of Ocean Waves

    • February 10, 2020

Ocean Waves feels like a very different type of movie from Studio Ghibli. In a library of films that look back to the magic of childhood, Ocean Waves dared to look forward, to the relative mundanity of adulthood. As a teenager I wrote it off as the 'one bad Ghibli movie', but now - nearly twenty years later - I've rediscovered it as a new favourite. Today I'm hoping to get anyone who wrote it off in a similar manner to perhaps give it another chance as well. • March 12, 2020

Mushishi feels like a true outlier in a medium that vies loudly for your continued attention. An ethereal show about a world on the fringes of our own, where the ghost-like Mushi play, it is content to to court its viewers in leisurely fashion. As the planes of their realm and ours intersect, causing malady and strife for those caught up in that invisible war, Ginko - a healing Mushishi - fights softly for a harmony hard won. • S2020E05 Terrace House - Japan's Coziest Export

    • April 19, 2020

Japanese television, much like the country itself, is often made out to be loud, colourful and absolutely bizarre. Terrace House is a beautiful outlier to that stereotype, a cozy and warm show that strives to bring a bit of reality back to reality TV. The premise is simple: men and women coming together in the hopes of finding friendship, romance, or even themselves. • S2020E06 Why Beck Rocked

    • June 19, 2020

Beck was one of those rare adaptations that felt absolutely vital to its manga counterpart. It might feel a little dated today, but the music it brought to that silent world is still ringing in my ears nearly twenty years on. • S2020E07 The Best of Bitesize Anime

    • July 28, 2020

Short Form anime is a medium that understands the value of time. Less than twenty minutes a piece - often a lot less - these bitesize shows truly embody the mantra of 'less is more', working twice as hard, twice as fast to make an impact. In this video I explore this fascinating art-form, and share with you eight of my favourites from its wide and varied pantheon. 00:00 Introduction to Short-Form anime 02:21 Encouragement of Climb 03:45 Space Patrol Luluco 06:05 Aggretsuko 08:41 Honobono Log 09:35 Fireball 12:09 Please Tell Me! • S2020E08 High Stakes - The Insatiable Action of Vampire Hunter D

    • August 28, 2020

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust released in 2000 and raised the bar for action anime. Directed by a true master of the genre, Yoshiaki Kawajiri, and based off the beautiful Gothic prose of author Hideyuki Kikuchi, D returned to remind us just how badass a vampire hunter can be. In this video, we explore the seminal book series that started it all, the salacious 1985 classic and of course, one of the finest anime films ever made: Bloodlust. • S2020E09 DEGENERATE - An Exploration of Sex in Anime & Manga

    • October 22, 2020

Anime and Manga have long carried an unsavoury image - an oversexualized stigma that they've battled and embraced in equal measure for decades. In this video I explore the pervasive nature of erotica in those industries, and how sex is defining a fascinating movement in Japanese storytelling. 00:00 Introduction 00:52 PART I - Hentai, Doujinshi and Fanservice 14:14 PART II - Sex in Anime & Manga 16:19 Genshiken, Yonensei & Gonensei 19:26 Scum's Wish 20:58 Nana to Kaoru 22:55 Interspecies Reviewers 25:10 Bloom Into You 28:15 O Maidens In Your Savage Season 31:00 Belladonna of Sadness 33:06 Conclusion & Credits Consider supporting me on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/BeyondGhibli Follow me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/BeyondGhibli Special Thanks to Gigguk (http://youtube.com/gigguk) and Isla McTear (http://youtube.com/islamctear) for lending their vocal talents to this project! • S2020E10 A Moment to Breathe - Hana, Alice & Shunji Iwai

    • November 23, 2020

Shunji Iwai is a fascinating director. His work explores humanity, the wonderful good, the terrifying bad and everything in between, through a series of stunningly captured moments - moments that Iwai allows to breathe in leisurely extended scenes. In this video I explore his filmography through those moments, and dive into one of his most underappreciated gems: the animated masterpiece that is The Case of Hana & Alice. This video is a response to Joe Yang's Anitube November Challenge, in which the community was tasked with shining a spotlight on an underrepresented anime on the YouTube platform. • December 18, 2020

At the end of a rough year, Tokyo Godfathers proves to be the film we all need right now. It's a Christmas movie that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the greats, and champions a message of kindness and togetherness. Like all of Satoshi Kon's small but wonderful filmography, it's a picture that captures humanity at its terrifying worst, and its inspirational best. Season 2021

  • S2021E01 Love, Loss & Shogi - March Comes in like a Lion

    • January 29, 2021

March Comes in like a Lion is a show about loss. Despite that, it's one of the most heartfelt and hopeful series I've encountered. Buoyed by a wonderful cast and a steady feeling of narrative ascent, this sweet slice of life hidden inside a show about Shogi proves that sometimes the riskiest moves are the ones most worth taking. • S2021E02 Vinland Saga - Those Violent Delights

    • February 28, 2021

Vinland Saga is a phenomenal piece of Viking fiction - packed in equal measure with kinetic violence and beautiful humanity. Over its fifteen years in publication, mangaka Makoto Yukimura has given us one of the medium's best works - one that has truly earned the saga of its title. Vinland Saga was originally recommended to me during 'Patron Picked Purchases' over at the Beyond Ghibli Patreon - an annual event where I'll read and review a manga of your choice! For the month of March we're doing PPP again, and anyone who pledges $5 or more can do just that. It's part of a pledge drive to tip us over the edge of a stretch goal we've been on the cusp of for ages - a deep-dive into all things Full Metal Alchemist. • S2021E03 We Are MOTHER - The Nintendo Series That Belongs To Us

    • May 8, 2021

No crying until the end. In Japan, MOTHER is a beloved trilogy of strange, funny, heartrending games - but when it released in America as Earthbound, it didn't enjoy the same success. Retrospective, documentary and celebration all at once, 'We Are MOTHER' looks at the history of one of Nintendo's most peculiar properties and how, against all odds, it found lasting success because of a small, impassioned, and unrelenting fandom. His work at THE Earthbound fan-site, Starmen, and the support (and Merch!!) he and his team have made for the series over at Fangamer, have made being an English MOTHER fan a little easier on the heart over the years. • S2021E04 Speed of Lightness - A Lo-Fi Look at Japan

    • May 26, 2021

In Barrie Sherwood's sophomore novel, Speed of Lightness, he takes an unromanticised but wildly engaging look at Japan. As our lead, Aozora, dodges Yakuza knuckledusters and parleys with gyaru call girls in pursuit of his missing sister - and the inheritance she's key to - we're taken on a beautifully broken tour of that wonderful world. • July 28, 2021

Jin-Roh can seem an intimidating prospect: as part of a 20 year saga comprised of comic books, movies and even radio dramas, that impressive lineage often puts newcomers off. • August 28, 2021

  • S2021E07 Star Wars Visions - The Return of the Lightsaber

    • October 7, 2021

In 1977, an icon was born. The Lightsaber - ethereal in nature and terrifying in power - became the symbol of Star Wars, and would go on to define this series for more than forty years. As the franchise evolved, however, so did its sabers. Star Wars Visions - an animated anthology of shorts by some of Japan's biggest studios and directors - continues to celebrate this ever-changing legacy, but one short in particular - The Ninth Jedi - champion instead a return to a more civilized age...
