Noch komplizierter wird der Fall, nachdem sich herausstellt, dass der Auftragskiller in Miami offenbar die Hausnummern verwechselt und somit das falsche Paar ermordet hat.
After sixteen-year-old Laura Spellman finds the brutally slain bodies of her parents, Horatio Caine vows to personally track down the killer and let Laura know she is safe. A scrap of paper with the lettering from a car rental company leads the CSIs to an important clue: the killer flew in from New York. Determined to keep his promise to Laura, Horatio boards a plane to New York, on the tail of Nick Murdoch, whom he believes is the killer.
Meanwhile in New York, NYPD CSI Mac Taylor is called to the scene of a murder of an undercover officer identified as Nick Murdoch who has been strangled. Horatio arrives in New York and the two CSIs realize that the murderer had stolen Murdoch's identity. Mac agrees to hand over jurisdiction to MDPD. Their investigations lead them to one of New York City's richest families, the Hanovers. Michael Hanover, Sr. was murdered while his son survived the attack. The two teams must now find the link between the murders of two unrelated families and bring the perpetrator to justice before he strikes again.

Après que Laura Spellman, seize ans, ait découvert les corps brutalement assassinés de ses parents, Horatio Caine jure de retrouver personnellement le tueur. Un bout de papier portant le nom d'une agence de location de voitures mène les enquêteurs à un indice crucial : le tueur est arrivé de New York. Déterminé à tenir sa promesse envers Laura, Horatio embarque pour New York. Pendant ce temps, à New York, l'enquêteur Mac Taylor du NYPD est appelé sur les lieux du meurtre d'un agent infiltré identifié comme Nick Murdoch, étranglé. Horatio arrive à New York et les deux enquêteurs réalisent que le meurtrier a usurpé l'identité de Murdoch. Leurs enquêtes les mènent à l'une des familles les plus riches de New York, les Hanover. Michael Hanover Sr. a été assassiné tandis que son fils a survécu à l'attaque. Les deux équipes doivent désormais trouver le lien entre les meurtres de deux familles sans lien de parenté et traduire le coupable en justice avant qu'il ne frappe à nouveau.
