Brigid Broekhoven, a 50-year-old former alcoholic living in Blackrock, Dublin, becomes concerned about her increase in weight, while her 20-year-old daughter Lizzy is worried about her irritable bowel syndrome. The pair seek expert guidance in improving their lifestyle, but when a CT scan provides evidence that Brigid has a possibly cancerous growth on her kidney, the check-up proves to be more than timely. While her mother heads for surgery, Lizzy is informed that her family's health history means she must reduce her high cholesterol by revising her eating habits and increasing her fitness level.
