    Louise has some disappointing news for the emotional Mrs. Luke v her transfer to Stoke Mandeville has been delayed. Les tries to convince Giles to go on holiday with him but his response is a bit tepid. A casualty patient is admitted with severe breathing difficulties.

    Guy receives a series of pestering phone calls from Barbara during an important operation, much to his annoyance and everyone else’s amusement. Grant becomes aggressive with a pneumonia patient who he believes is lying to him. Louise asks Giles to confirm that his offer of marriage is genuine.

    Giles is concerned that Louise’s brother won’t give his blessing to their engagement. Barbara gives Guy 21 bit of a shock. Les is looking forward to his holiday with Giles, but Giles tries to wriggle out of it.

    Les forwards a meningitis case to Lane Russell. Lydia tries to get Barbara out of her mood but fails miserably. Louise tries desperately to make Giles understand what marriage would mean to her. De la Roux confesses to Leon that he will do whatever he can to prevent Grant becoming the new chairman.

    Barbara attempts an overdose but is found in time and rushed to hospital - Guy is shocked. Doctor Grant has to deal with a prickly patient, and the Oxbridge management committee choose a new chairman - Leon Dorsey, who promptly collapses at the meeting.

    Leon is still feeling unwell and Doctor Grant tries to use the situation to take a swipe at de la Roux. Charles Booth’s familiar manner with the nurses earns him a disapproving stare from the Sister. Guy gets an offer he may not be able to refuse when Barbara tries to help him in his career.

    The nurses get a scary pep talk on passing their exams from Sister. Mr. Price is concerned that it will take too long for him to get better Doctor Grant convinces Eleanor that Leon needs to have a proper examination. Lane Russell’s meningitis case goes critical when a sudden noise sends him into laryngeal spasm. Drastic action is called for.

    Les is involved in a road traffic accident, losing control and ramming another car. The other car’s occupant, Lena Hyde, is knocked out of the car and moved to a private room on instruction from her boss. Leon has an argument with his wife but agrees to let Doctor Grant examine him.

    Leon’s only chance is to be made permanently deaf in one ear, a solution he will not abide. Les is plunged into a state of crisis when a policeman calls at the hospital to see him. Gerald Frobisher, Lena Hyde’s boss, pays her a Visit.

    Guy examines Billy - a young boy who’s lost some fingers to a firework explosion A and becomes concerned about his home arrangements. Giles lets slip that he‘s now engaged to Louise. Leon is confined to bed, now that the operation has disrupted his sense of balance.

    Giles has to deal with Billy’s infected hand. Les confides in Giles that the police are looking to prosecute him for dangerous driving. Leon’s operation was successful, but now he needs to learn to maintain his balance again. The consultants get a bit of a shock.

    An acute abdominal case is rushed into Casualty. Billy gets a surprise visit from his mother - a shock to Sister Ransome, who had been told that Billy’s mother was dead. Guy intervenes. Charles takes the opportunity to wind up Les over Lena Hyde.

    Billy’s mother tries to take him from the hospital by force. Leon has regrets about his operation, much to his wife’s annoyance Guy gets an offer from an American university but is concerned that the offer was made for less than genuine reasons.

    Leon causes alarm and despondency when he goes into a fit of the miseries and then disappears from his room. Matron canvasses opinions as to whether she should implement a change in the shift pattern. Les receives a £200 bill for car repairs.

    Lena’s temperature is down and she anxiously awaits the results of her encephalograph test. She tries to convince Frobisher to drop the claim for damages against Les but he’s having none of it. Matron introduces a new shift system for the nurses.

    Lane Russell thinks that Les’s impending prosecution is a blessing as he’s never thought much of his driving style. Doctor Chalmers discusses Barbara’s gift with Guy and finally arrives at a solution. Staff Nurse Lyle is attacked by a psychotic patient.

    Mrs. Brown’s condition causes some anxiety and she’s encased in an oxygen tent. Lane Russell gently winds up Sister MacNab about the night shift rotation but she doesn’t find it funny. Dri Chalmers reaches an agreement with Leon.

    Les attacks an intruder when he hears screaming, only to find it’s Bacon playing a bad practical joke. Les reads him the riot act. Louise confesses to Giles that she’s managed to lose her engagement ring. Les takes betting tips from Mr. Springer.

    Les wins £200 on a horse, as does Giles who gets into a big argument about it with Louise; she detests gambling. Mr. Springer has a fit of the miseries - Giles gives him a pep talk. Both Les and Giles are appalled when their winning horse is disqualified.

Gittings sulks when he’s assigned to evening shift at Casualty and has to miss the League of Hospital Friends dance.
