The "golden" 1960s initially promised economic growth and an improvement in the quality of life: for many people, new opportunities arose in terms of education, work and mobility. At the same time, Tito succeeded, through his "Non-Aligned Movement", in establishing Yugoslavia as a country of international significance within a "Third Block"situated between the East and the Global South, comprising mainly states from the Global South. For many people, Tito embodied stability and was regarded as a symbolic figure for the idea of a united Yugoslavia. Behind this façade, however, the multi-ethnic state had already begun to drift apart as early as the 1960s.
