Katerina talks Melanie into holding a party in order to gain popularity. Melanie who is holding a torch for Ryan, hopes it will bring him closer to her. She spends up big on credit cards and initially the cost seems worth it. However, when Melanie's father's video camera gets broken she can't afford to get it fixed, Melanie realises that she has spent way beyond her means. And she is dismayed when Ryan tries to give back the expensive gold pendant she bought for him. Melanie learns you can't buy friends. Ryan decides to live and work with his father. Jeff says that they will need to mortgage the land Ryan's grandfather left him to expand the business. Ryan is shocked at this revelation concluding that his father came back for the money and not for him. When he accuses his father of this, Jeff is hurt and urges him to forget the business, keep the money, but Ryan realises he values his friends in Hartley and decides to stay. Mélanie aimerait se faire plus d’amis. Elle propose à tout le monde de venir au ciné avec elle mais ils refusent tous, sauf Katerina. Elle lui conseille d’organiser une soirée pour se rendre populaire au sein de l’école. Mélanie trouve cette idée géniale et elle compte bien profiter de cette fête pour séduire Ryan...
Entre-temps, le père de Ryan lui demande de prendre une décision pour devenir son partenaire dans ses affaires et Ryan accepte malgré qu’il commence à se sentir bien à Hartley. Plus tard, nous découvrons que Jeff a besoin d’hypothéquer une partie du patrimoine de Ryan que son grand-père lui a légué et Ryan se sent après un peu trahi. A la fin, il signe quand même les papiers de l’hypothèque pour aider son père, mais il préfère rester au lycée.
Mel et Katerina continuent d’organiser leur fête et Mélanie dépense énormément d’argent dans les préparatifs. La soirée arrive et bien qu’elle soit une réussite au début, elle tourne vite au cauchemar lorsque Drazic qui n’était pas invité s’incruste et sème la pagaille. Le lendemain, le père de Mel découvre l’étendue des dégâts chez elle et aussi sur ses comptes bancaires qui sont pratiquement vide. Il lui confisque ses cartes de crédit. Pour finir, elle se dispute avec Katerina.

Katerina laat Melanie een feestje geven om aan populariteit te winnen. Melanie, die gek is op Ryan, hoopt dat het hem dichter bij haar zal brengen. Ze geeft veel uit en in eerste instantie lijken de kosten het waard. Wanneer echter de videocamera van Melanie's vader kapot gaat en ze het zich niet kan veroorloven om hem te repareren, beseft Melanie dat ze veel te veel heeft besteed. Ryan besluit om bij zijn vader te gaan wonen en voor hem te gaan werken. Jeff wil het land verpachten dat ze van Ryan's grootvader hebben geërfd, om het bedrijf uit te breiden. Ryan is geschokt als hij concludeert dat zijn vader terugkwam voor het geld en niet voor hem. Charlie wordt overgehaald voor een partij beachvolleybal.
