The Hunt for Hitler

Unless Hitler is holed up in Paraguay minus his teeth and the top of his skull it looks as though he really did die in his Berlin bunker in 1945. The Russians, it seems, had his body all along, and here we get to see a forensic scientist compare a set of rotten old choppers with a diagram of the Fuhrer's distinctive bridgework and declare that, yes, Hitler really is dead. All that comes towards the end of the program, but first we get a fascinating look at the theories that built up about Hitler's disappearance in the dying days of the war in Europe. Some thought he might have been in a little two-seater plane that took off from a street in Berlin as the Soviets invaded, so startling Stalin's troops that they neglected to shoot it down. Others fancied he was living in France or had taken a U-boat to Argentina or Antarctica. The consensus seems to be that the Soviets found his body early on but that Stalin demanded it be kept secret for his own political purposes - which even extended to accusing Britain of harbouring him. Fascinating.
