Wokulski leaves for Paris. In the meantime, Rzecki, acting as his proxy, visits the Łęcki tenement. He befriends Mrs. Stawska, her mother, and her little daughter, and as a result of his visit lowers their rent. He also meets Baroness Krzeszowska and the students who do not pay rent at all. In Paris, Wokulski revels with Suzyn. In his spare time, he receives crowds of petitioners — as a potential ‘sponsor.’ Two figures catch his interest: Baroness Saint-Germain commissions him to find Mrs. Stawska’s missing husband, and Professor Geist fascinates him with experiments on metals, among which is one lighter than air. But the heart is not a servant — when he receives a letter from the Countess, he returns to Warsaw.
