En mars 1985, le Rainbow Warrior, bateau amiral de Greenpeace, est amarré à Auckland en Nouvelle-Zélande. Les activistes préparent une nouvelle action d’envergure pour stopper les essais nucléaires français en Polynésie. Une taupe informe les autorités françaises qui réagissent dans la précipitation. Le 10 juillet 1985, une douzaine d’agents de la DGSE sont en Nouvelle Zélande pour déclencher l’opération ‘’Satanique’’. Les hommes-grenouilles fixent à la coque du chalutier deux charges explosives, le bateau coule en quelques minutes. Le photographe de Greenpeace meurt noyé. Le scandale est retentissant. C’est ‘’la plus grave violation de la souveraineté territoriale qu’ait jamais subi la Nouvelle-Zélande. Un acte de terrorisme soutenu par un État, un acte de guerre’’ déclare le ministre néo-zélandais Geoffrey Palmer. Mitterrand au courant de l’opération depuis le début, tente de désamorcer la crise. Une vaste campagne d’intoxication débute.

March 1985, the Rainbow Warrior, the flagship of the Greenpeace fleet, was docked in Auckland, New Zealand. The environmentalists were organizing a large-scale act of protest in order to put a stop to French nuclear testing in Polynesia. On 10th July 1985, a dozen DGSE (French Directorate General of External Security) agents were stationed in New Zealand to launch an operation to sink the Rainbow Warrior at all costs. There was a huge scandal, “an act of state-backed terrorism, an act of war”, declared the New Zealand minister, Geoffrey Palmer. Mitterrand, who had known about the operation from the very beginning, attempted to defuse the crisis. An extensive and pernicious campaign kicked off.
1985 utspelade sig en strid mellan David och Goliat på en samling paradisöar i Stilla havet. På ena sidan stod Greenpeace och på den andra den franska försvarsmakten. Operation Satanic inleddes med långhåriga aktivister som mål och när Greenpeace båt "Rainbow Warrior" sänktes i Aucklands hamn försökte den franska regeringen göra allt för att mörka att den låg bakom dådet.
