Savage plant seinen nächsten Coup. Während Onkel Joshua und die Kinder nach Amboise zu einem Erfinderkongreß reisen, läßt er in Sydney das dort ausgestellte Tagebuch von Leonardo da Vinci stehlen, in dem eine bisher noch unentdeckte Erfindung beschrieben wird: eine mittelalterliche Maschine, die hundertprozentig perfekt jedes Gemälde reproduzieren kann. Savage will mit der Mona Lisa beginnen. In Amboise, wo die berühmte lächelnde Dame zur Zeit in einem Museum zu sehen ist, treffen sich Sir Joshua, Albert und Vicki mit dem französischen Centauri-Mitglied Marie. Sie müssen bald feststellen, daß ihr Besuch in Frankreich ihnen mehr Ärger als Vergnügen bereiten wird. Nicht nur, daß Onkel Joshuas neueste Erfindung, ein Solarauto, nicht rechtzeitig eintrifft: der Museumsdirektor, einer der besten Kenner Leonardo da Vincis, verschwindet auf geheimnisvolle Weise...
In Sydney, one of Savage's cohorts steals a journal belonging to Leonardo DaVinci. Savage hopes to use one of the inventions described in the jorunal to create a duplicate of the famed Mona Lisa and use this forgery to replace the original which is currently on display in a museum in Amboise, France. Meanwhile, Sir Joshua travels with Vicki and Albert to an inventors' congress in Amboise where he is to unveil his solar-powered car. There the kids get to meet Centauri Network member Marie and Pierre, whose grandfather is the director of the museum and a leading expert on Leonardo da Vinci. When Pierre's grandfather is abducted, the children must work to rescue him from a secret lab beneath a castle in the Loire Valley before Savage can learn the secret to the duplicator.
