The Winston 500 was held on May 2 at the Alabama International Motor Speedway. The race is remembered for the bizarre story of the mysterious L. W. Wright, a con-artist pretending to be a NASCAR veteran. Wright started and finished near the back, then after the race disappeared after his checks for a NASCAR license and car bounced. He would go into hiding for almost 40 years until resurfacing for an interview with The Scene Vault's Rick Houston.
