One evening O. Henry sets out on a mission to find a "Man About Town," an elusive character he's been writing about but does not fully grasp who or what such a Man might be like. His quest leads from flower woman Mary to an elegant tramp on a park bench (Hans Conreid), to a shop girl who refused to date such a "Man," to a newspaper reporter (Alan Hale Jr.), to Follies dancer Trixie and a runaway automobile.
