But deep in the 'pot bank' they're trying to reshape working lives. Staffordshire Potteries, Britain's major mug producers, have adopted a new Japanese style of management. They are aiming to increase the motivation and job satisfaction of their employees by giving them more say in the company's decisions. But will this really improve work and conditions on the shopfloor, or is it just subtle psychology designed to boost productivity?
