It's probably not news to you that Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is copaganda, but chances are that you haven't even noticed one of its most egregious and damaging portrayals of our justice system. The US child welfare system, or more accurately described as "family police," forcibly remove approximately 200,000 children from their families every year, coerce hundreds of thousands more into surveillance and harassment, and do so specifically to target black people. 53% of black children will be the subject of a CPS investigation before they turn 18. Why is this system so bad? And why do we keep pumping children into it?
