داستان از روز پنجاه‌سالگی سلطنت ناصرالدین‌شاه قاجار آغاز می‌شود؛ شاه در حالی که نگران پیش‌گویی منجم درباره آینده است، به مرور خاطرات گذشته خود می‌پردازد. در ادامه، روابط و ماجراهای درباری، رقابت‌ها و توطئه‌های پنهان دربار قاجار به تصویر کشیده می‌شود. سریال در کنار پرداختن به جنبه‌های تاریخی، به روابط پیچیده شاه با اطرافیانش و رویدادهای سرنوشت‌سازی که مسیر سلطنت او را تغییر می‌دهند نیز می‌پردازد.
