L'équipe du MI-5 est véritablement prise au dépourvu lorsque Patrick McCann, chef d'un groupe dissident irlandais, pénètre dans un sanctuaire, grenade au poing, et exige de s'entretenir d'Asabiyah avec un responsable. Il dispose d'informations cruciales sur ce groupe terroriste du Moyen-Orient et ne parlera qu'à quelqu'un de haut placé, déjà informé de son existence. Une réunion de crise est convoquée durant laquelle Tom propose de rencontrer McCann. Harry n'est toutefois pas convaincu : il se méfie énormément des motivations de McCann. Les résultats du vote cautionnent Tom qui affrontera McCann sans micro ni renforts, conformément aux revendications de ce dernier.
