Unbroadcast Pre-Pilot Test, a.k.a. The Cherries

Once upon a time there was an act named allSTARS* (with an asterisk), and starting in 2001 they gave us a handful of chart hits - their biggest being a cover of The Land of Make Believe - and two series of the CITV comedy show STARStreet. It's obvious and lazy to draw comparisons with S Club 7, but sadly allSTARS* (with an asterisk) never quite managed to take it to that level, and by the end of 2002, they called it a day. That was that. Rewind back to 1999, though, and Carlton commissioned a short tester for what would one day become STARStreet. It was called The Cherries, and it featured six young hopefuls in a sort of extended sketch designed to show off their individual personalities and musical prowess. It wasn't intended for broadcast, and none of this has ever seen the light of day before, but it's fascinating to note that the whole tone of the show (with its cartoon nature and sound effects) and basic characteristics of the personnel were set very early on, even before they'd settled on a name or even decided the final cast. So they recorded a signature song, worked out the fundamental premise for the programme, and even created this pre-pilot proof of concept, all before incrementally replacing each member and whittling the group down to five, ultimately with only Sam remaining from this video.
