Season 1999

  • S1999E01 The Billion Dollar Secret

    From 1987 to 2001, Nick Cook was Aviation Editor of Jane's Defence Weekly, the international defence journal. He is currently the magazine's Aerospace Consultant. His exclusive stories for Jane's have included reports on Russian secret weapons and a second classified operation to rescue US hostages in Iran. He is also a regular contributor to the Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal and writes extensively for other United Kingdom and international media. In his 18 year career, he has visited the world's leading defense establishments and has gained access to numerous top secret military facilities and bases in the US and former Soviet Union. As a regular commentator on defence and security issues, his views and analysis were sought by UK, US, and other world news media during the 1991 and 2003 wars against Iraq and major conflicts in between. The programme starts by speaking of the annual Pentagon budget of 250 billion dollars which is submitted to congress for approval. From his office in London, Cook asserts that if all the line items are calculated, there is a mismatch of about 20 billion dollars, which he claims is used for 'black projects.'

    Documentary that recounts the events surrounding the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun and the fate of the men that opened it. Seventy-five years after a British team of archeologists discovered and opened the tomb, legends about the curse of King Tut continue to circulate. The stories of the curse were fueled by the accidental deaths of several of the individuals responsible for the expedition and the excavation of the tomb. Legend has it, that when the tomb was sealed over 2000 years ago, Egyptian priests placed a protective spell on the tomb, cursing anyone who disturbed the sanctuary.

    As the World Watched is a documentary film that covered the final moments of the passengers and crew on board United Airlines Flight 175, which was the second commercial airliner to strike the World Trade Center, impacting the South Tower, and was the most visually documented flight during the September 11 attacks. The documentary features interviews with a variety of people, including: relatives of the passengers and crew members, air traffic controllers who responded to the doomed flight, and the two F-15 fighter pilots scrambled from Otis Air National Guard Base who flew in the airspace over Lower Manhattan during the event.

With an eye on the parallels with the UK prison system, Jodie questions whether by the time these women get locked up it's too late for them, and if more should be done to improve their lives before incarceration looms large.
