Restoring Order: State of Emergency - Ferguson, Missouri (Dispatch 3)

On August 20, the day before Missouri's governor recalled the National Guard from Ferguson, protesters demonstrated peacefully in the streets as the situation appeared to stabilize. VICE News interviewed Missouri Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson, who has been working to ease tensions between police and demonstrators following the shooting of Michael Brown. He noted the efforts of clergy and local elders to help calm the unrest, and acknowledged that the greatest policing comes from within the community. We also spoke with David Schroeder, a former member of the National Guard who traveled to Ferguson from Indianapolis. He argued that the militarized response from local police had served only to aggravate and threaten residents, betraying a lack of training and tact — as well as a lack of accountability.
