Commissioner Modeste Laviolette is a retired police commissioner in the Haute Provence region (France) who often comes to the aid of Judge Chabrand and then his successor, Judge Tardieu, in crime cases where Gendarme Joubert may not find the culprit. He is often helped by his maid Solange who knows the local stories well. The story takes place in the 1960s.
