On the wall outside Jiang Zemin's study hung a map dotted with tiny round paper discs. It was a footprint map of the nearly 150 inspection and research trips Jiang Zemin made across the country after becoming General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee in 1989. This special map was a microcosm of the close ties between Zhongnanhai and the people.
