Hoping to spend more family time with their two daughters, Craig and Illiana have dreams of an income producing home in the low-cost city of Cuenca, Ecuador, that will allow them to retire at an early age. Despite having never visited Ecuador, they take the plunge and travel to South America with their savings on the line. After deciding between three uniquely Cuencan historic properties, it doesn't take long for their renovation to veer out of their control. From local building customs, to mud and straw walls to human remains on the property, the problems pile up and the renovation stretches on and on with no end in sight.
