बटाईदार किसान हल्कू और उसकी पत्नी मुन्नी कम्बल के लिए पैसे जोड़ते हैं लेकिन लगान चुकाना पड़ता है। ठिठुरती रात में हल्कू बिना कम्बल के खेत की रखवाली करता है और अपने कुत्ते जबरा के साथ आग तापता है। जब नीलगाय खेत में घुसती हैं, ठंड से कांपता हल्कू उन्हें भगाने नहीं जाता और फसल नष्ट हो जाती है। सुबह मुन्नी नाराज़ होती है, लेकिन हल्कू खुश है कि अब उसे ऐसी ठंडी रातें नहीं झेलनी पड़ेंगी.
Tenant farmer Halku and his wife Munni save money for a blanket but must pay their landlord instead. On a freezing winter night, Halku guards his crop without a blanket. He and his dog Jabra warm themselves by the fire. When a herd of nilgai enters the field, Halku lets the crop be destroyed because he cannot bear the cold. Munni is angry in the morning, but Halku smiles because he will no longer have to endure such nights.
