नीची जाति के जोखू और गंगी का कुआँ गंदा होने से पीने योग्य नहीं है और ठाकुर के कुएँ पर उन्हें पानी भरने नहीं दिया जाता। गंगी रात में चोरी‑छिपे ठाकुर के कुएँ से पानी भरती है, पर ठाकुर के आने की आहट से घड़ा गिर जाता है और वह डर से भाग जाती है। कहानी छुआछूत और पानी जैसे मौलिक अधिकार से वंचित करने की कुरीति की पोल खोलती है.
Low‑caste couple Jokhu and Gangi cannot drink from the village well because upper‑caste Thakur forbids them. Their own well is foul. Desperate, Gangi sneaks to the Thakur’s well at night, fills a pot, but drops it and flees when she hears the Thakur approaching. The tale exposes caste discrimination and the denial of basic rights.
